Samuel Sharpe, prophet and liberator

Ede (BWA) -- He was hailed as a prophet during morning worship, and declared as
a liberator in the afternoon.
Samuel Sharpe, an educated Jamaican slave and Baptist deacon, led a rebellion that
some scholars say hastened the end of chattel slavery in the British colonies in
the Caribbean in 1838. The rebellion, which began as a sit-down strike in December
1831, quickly turned violent, against Sharpe's wishes. In the end, more than 600

Callam calls for commissions on Christian-Muslim dialogue and intra-Baptist relations

Ede (BWA) -- Baptist World Alliance General Secretary Neville Callam has urged the
international Baptist body to create a commission that would deal primarily with
Baptist conversations with Muslims.
Callam, during the General Council meeting of the BWA in Ede, Netherlands, on Friday,
July 31, said that such a commission would "receive contributions from ongoing dialogue
taking place around the world." He stated that the commission "could also provide

BWA launches legacy fund

Ede (BWA) -- The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) has launched the BWA 400 Legacy Fund.
Inaugurated to mark the 400th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Baptist
movement, the fund is aimed at creating a reserve that will provide stability for
the financial future of the BWA.
General Secretary Neville Callam announced the new initiative at the meeting of
the General Council of the BWA in Ede, Netherlands, on Friday, July 31. The BWA

John Upton is President-elect

Ede (BWA) -- John Upton, executive director of the Baptist General Association of
Virginia (BGAV) in the United States, has been nominated to be president of the
Baptist World Alliance.
Raul Scialabba of Argentina, chair of the BWA Officers Search Committee, made the
recommendation to the BWA General Council on Friday, June 31, which is convening
during the BWA Annual Gathering taking place in Ede, Netherlands, from July 27-August
